If I start my day without my early morning rituals, I know I’m likely to feel out of sorts. Daniel Handler explains it pretty well by saying “Morning is an important time of the day because how you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you’re going to have.”
Daily rituals and routines keep me steady, help me to stay in the moment, and complete the tasks I set for that day. There’s less chaos and more calmness in my daily life and I somehow always end up having ample time for self-care rituals too.
Installing daily rituals and routines can do wonders for your happiness and overall well-being. They ensure you conserve your mental, emotional, and physical energies while preventing your moods from see-sawing throughout the day.
Let’s delve deeper into this concept and discover how you can use daily rituals and routines to boost your wellness and happiness.
The Benefits of Having Daily Rituals and Routines
I’ve already pointed out some of the advantages I get from living a life that includes daily rituals and routines. But, here are some more benefits of installing good habits and structures every day:
More savoring moments: Waking up to a good brew, having tea breaks with a tasty cookie, and taking meals at the table allow you to savor the flavors when you eat and drink. These daily rituals need to be done mindfully so that you can savor these moments.
Processes feelings: Daily rituals such as journaling, meditation, and being present allow you to process your feelings. Whether you’re struggling with grief or full of gratitude, processing how you feel daily allows you to heal and be in a state of wellness.
Tackles procrastination: Healthy daily habits prevent procrastination! They let you take the first step to actualizing an outcome be it a work or personal project.
Boosts confidence: Daily self-care rituals and a solid routine help to improve confidence and self-esteem. Practicing self-love every day and completing tasks timeously improves overall performance in all areas of your life.
Daily rituals are good habits carried out every day to keep you performing at your best. A solid routine ensures you practice these habits while giving you the time to complete everyday tasks.
9 Daily Rituals to Boost Your Happiness and Well-Being
1. Walks in Nature
My early morning ritual includes a 20-minute walk around the farm with my partner, Paul, and our dog, Wilson. There’s something extremely magical about watching the sunrise, hearing the birds calling, and experiencing feelings of renewed hope for another day.
I try to end most days with a longer walk – it’s a wonderful way to release energies that have built up during the day and to decompress. Spending time in nature is healing as is moving your body.
If you live in a city, find a local park or green belt nearby for your daily walks. But, if that’s not possible, walking around your neighborhood is perfect – a new dawn brings the same energy whether you’re surrounded by buildings or trees.
2. Meditation
After my walk, I enjoy my first cup of coffee and breakfast. I then do a 20-minute meditation which sets the tone for the day ahead. Sometimes, I choose to do breathwork or a guided meditation or ask the question, “What do I need to know?” as intentions for my morning meditations.
Meditation keeps you present and brings clarity for the day ahead. It grounds you and keeps you centered no matter what curveballs are thrown at you! I have noticed that if I skip this part of my morning routine, there is likely to be more chaos throughout the day.
3. Reading Your Goals
It’s important to have goals as stepping stones towards living your purpose. Reading them every day keeps your energies vibrating at a higher level which is fantastic for manifestation. It keeps you motivated and reminds you of what action steps you need to take daily to reach the outcome.
My early morning routine looks something like this:
5.30 am: Go for a walk
6 am – 7 am: Coffee, breakfast and shower
7 am – 7.30 am: Read my goal and affirmations
7.30 am – 8 am: Meditation
By 8 am I’m all fired up to start my day!
4. Tea Breaks and Treats
There’s a reason why tea breaks are encouraged in the workplace! Short breaks improve productivity and efficiency while cultivating social bonding between colleagues. Including some treats such as biscuits can turn a short 15-minute interval into a highlight for the day.
Tea breaks should be a compulsory part of your day no matter what you do daily. They should be part of your personal life too –connect with your loved ones on weekends for a quick chat and a refreshing cup of tea or coffee with delicious cake.
While these short breaks give you a chance to connect with others, it’s also great when you’re alone and need time out from whatever you’re focusing on for the day. I see it as a mini-recharge in between seeing clients, writing blogs, or tackling some other task.
5. Journaling
Spending 20 to 30 minutes a day on self-reflection is powerful and journaling is a fantastic tool for doing exactly that. Writing in a daily journal allows you to be introspective and to unpack situations that bother you. Journaling is a wonderful safe space for expressing your thoughts and finding solutions to problems that are overwhelming or perplexing.
Journaling helps you to declutter your mind which is beneficial to your mental and emotional health. It’s affordable, requires very few resources, and can be done anywhere at any time. I often use my tarot cards when I journal – they’re the mirror of me and help me to see things with clarity and new perspectives.
However, if you need some guidance, consider downloading one of the following journals from The Free Spirit Store:

6. Healthy Social Connections
Spending time with someone you love and care for every day boosts your mental and emotional health. One of your most basic needs is love and connection and if it’s not met healthily you could become depressed, anxious, isolated, and resentful.
Make time every day to connect with your partner, your children, your friends, or family members. Ensure these connections are healthy and don’t violate your boundaries or values. Avoid situations that involve enmeshment, codependency, or emotional manipulation.
When you’re socially connected with a supportive and loving tribe, your overall wellness improves. Social engagement should:
Be meaningful and caring
Give you a sense of belonging
Leave you feeling valued and respected
Give you emotional and physical support
Make it your goal to connect with at least one person (or pet) every day.
7. Flow State Activities
Identify activities that get you into the flow state – being completely immersed in a task keeps you present, and stops you from overthinking or judging yourself. Cooking, reading, and walking in nature allow me to get into the flow state and these have become daily rituals for me.
Here are some other activities that can be done daily to keep you in the flow state:
Painting
Chopping vegetables
Gardening
Listening to music
Riding your motorcycle or bicycle
Pruning shrubs
Housework
Birdwatching
Sitting outdoors and watching nature
Flow-state activities give you a break from problems you may be facing – when you’re not constantly worrying about something, the solution often comes with little effort. When you achieve the flow state, some of your best work is done too so what’s stopping you from making them part of your daily routine?
8. Yoga
Practicing yoga daily allows you to be in a safe space, get into a flow state, and control issues such as anxiety. My partner does an hour of yoga every day without fail – if he misses a day, he feels out of sorts very quickly! While my preferred choice of quiet time is walking in nature, I have often turned to yoga to calm and ground me.
The many benefits of yoga improves your state of happiness and overall well-being. Incorporating yoga into your daily routine will:
Improve flexibility, balance, and strength
Give you relief from back pain, sciatica, and arthritis symptoms
Improve heart health
Help you to sleep better
Boosts your mood and gives you more energy
Help you manage stress better
If you can’t set aside one hour every day, consider doing 15 to 20 minutes of your favorite yoga poses. When I need to unwind after a stressful day, I combine yoga and meditation by doing the legs-up-the-wall pose while meditating with my favorite 528hz frequency music for 20 minutes.
9. Laugh
It’s too easy to get caught up in life’s dramas and before you know it, you suddenly realize that you have stopped laughing. I used to be known for my deep, belly laughs but over the years those have stopped. When I realized recently, I felt sad that I had allowed this to happen and every day, I now make sure I find something to laugh about.
Laughter is one of the best medicines available and it costs nothing! Here are some of the benefits of laughing:
It relaxes your body
It boosts your immune system
It protects your mental health
It brings your body back into balance
It inspires hope
It allows you to forgive and release suppressed anger
Make sure you make playfulness part of your daily routine. Identify fun activities that can become your go-to for a good laugh every day. Playing with our dog, watching him leopard crawl across the lawn, and watching funny YouTube videos or comedies are some of the ways I get my daily dose of laughter.

Final Thoughts
Daily rituals are key ingredients to your self-care and self-discovery journey. They support you when you face challenging times and allow you to process problems healthily. A final tip! Having a solid daily routine ensures you make time for these essential rituals. If I’m feeling particularly stressed, I actively sit down and draw up a weekly timetable.
A well-planned timetable prevents procrastination, incorporates self-care and inner work practices, and ensures you feel balanced and centered throughout the day. It allows me to keep on track with my goals, to handle unexpected changes, and to have more freedom to do the things I want to do.
